How food banks actually work (and how to access one today)

More than 3 million emergency food parcels were distributed in the UK last year. Food banks exist because the system sometimes fails people — and there's no shame in using one when you need it.
How food banks work
The Trussell Trust network
The largest network, with over 1,400 centres. They operate on a **referral basis**:
1. You get a referral from a professional (GP, social worker, Jobcentre, Citizens Advice, school)
2. Take your referral to your nearest food bank
3. Receive a food parcel — typically 3 days of nutritionally balanced food
Independent food banks
There are hundreds of independent food banks that often **don't require a referral**. Many operate on a walk-in basis.
Community fridges and pantries
A growing number of **community food pantries** offer low-cost or free food without referrals — often surplus food from supermarkets.

Remember: food banks exist to help you through a difficult time. Using one when you need it is a strength, not a weakness.
