# Can't afford home insurance? Low-cost options that exist

25 August 2026 · 2 min read

Share:

Around 40% of UK households in the lowest income bracket have no contents insurance. One theft, fire, or flood could be devastating. But insurance doesn't have to be expensive.

## Why it matters

If you're burgled, flooded, or have a fire:

- \*\*Without insurance\*\*: you lose everything and have to replace it yourself
- \*\*With insurance\*\*: your belongings are replaced or repaid

For people already in financial difficulty, an uninsured loss can be catastrophic.

## Affordable options

### My Home Contents Insurance

Specifically designed for low-income households. Available from \*\*£4/month\*\* (paid fortnightly or monthly). Run by the Royal London Group. Ask your housing association or council if they offer it.

### Housing association schemes

Many housing associations offer contents insurance to tenants at \*\*reduced rates\*\* — sometimes from £2/week. Check with your landlord.

### Pay monthly

Most insurers offer monthly payments. This is slightly more expensive than annual, but more manageable.

### Reduce the premium

- Insure for the actual value of your belongings (most people overestimate)
- Increase your voluntary excess to £150-250
- Install a basic door chain or window locks
- Don't insure individual high-value items if you don't have any

## What to insure

You don't need to insure everything. Focus on:

- Essential items you'd need to replace (clothing, bedding, school equipment)
- Kitchen appliances
- Electronics (phone, laptop)
- Children's belongings

## If you can't afford any insurance

At minimum:

- Keep valuables out of sight
- Lock doors and windows
- Take photos of valuable items (for any future charity applications)
- Know that if disaster strikes, local welfare assistance and charitable grants can help — but insurance is always better

For as little as the cost of a coffee per week, contents insurance protects you against the worst.
