Universal Credit is the main benefit for working-age people on a low income. Whether you've lost your job, had your hours cut, or simply can't make ends meet — you may be eligible even if you're employed.

Am I eligible?

You may qualify if:

  • You're aged 18 or over (some 16–17 year olds qualify)
  • You're under State Pension age
  • You're on a low income or out of work
  • You have savings of **£16,000 or less**
  • You live in the UK

  • If you have a partner, you'll usually make a joint claim. Both of your incomes and savings are assessed together.

    How much could I get?

    The standard allowance (2026/27):

  • Single, under 25: **£311.68/month**
  • Single, 25+: **£393.45/month**
  • Couple, both under 25: **£489.23/month**
  • Couple, one or both 25+: **£617.56/month**

  • **Plus additional amounts for:**

  • Children: £290–£315 per child
  • Housing costs: based on your rent (Local Housing Allowance rate)
  • Disability: £390–£416 per month
  • Caring responsibilities: £198.31 per month

  • How to apply

    Step 1: Apply online

Go to **gov.uk/universal-credit** and create an account. You'll need:

  • Your National Insurance number
  • Bank account details
  • Details of your income, savings, and housing costs
  • Proof of identity

  • Step 2: Attend your interview

You'll be invited to your local Jobcentre Plus for an interview. Bring ID and any documents they request.

Step 3: Wait for your first payment

Your first payment arrives **5 weeks** after your claim date. This is the assessment period.

    Avoiding the 5-week wait

    Request an advance payment

You can ask for a **Universal Credit Advance** from day one. This gives you up to one month's estimated UC payment within **days**. The advance is repaid from future payments over 24 months.

    Other immediate help

    While waiting for UC:

  • Apply for **Council Tax Reduction** (separate from UC)
  • Contact your energy supplier about **hardship funds**
  • Register with your **local food bank** (get a referral from Jobcentre or Citizens Advice)
  • Apply for **Local Welfare Assistance** from your council
  • Check your local **Household Support Fund**

  • Tips for success

  • **Keep a journal** of your job search activities — you'll need to show you're meeting your commitments
  • **Report all income changes** immediately — overpayments are clawed back
  • **Keep your account up to date** — check your UC journal regularly
  • **Don't ignore messages** — missing an appointment can lead to sanctions
