Unlike energy and other utilities, your water company **cannot disconnect your supply** for non-payment. But that doesn't mean you should ignore water debt — there are better options.

Your key right: water cannot be disconnected

By law, water companies in England and Wales **cannot cut off your water supply** if you don't pay. This is because water is considered essential for life. However, they can still take you to court for the debt.

Schemes that can reduce your bill

WaterSure (capped tariff)

If you're on a water meter AND receive certain benefits AND have either:

  • 3 or more children under 19, OR
  • A medical condition requiring extra water use

  • Your bill is **capped at the average** for your area. This can save hundreds of pounds.

    Social tariffs

Every water company must offer a **social tariff** for customers on low incomes. These can reduce your bill by **up to 50%**. Names vary by company:

  • Thames Water: WaterHelp
  • United Utilities: Help to Pay
  • Severn Trent: Big Difference Scheme
  • Yorkshire Water: Supporting You
  • Anglian Water: LITE tariff

  • Payment holidays

Most water companies offer **payment breaks** if you're in temporary hardship. Contact them directly.

    Debt write-off schemes

Some companies will **match your payments** — for every £1 you pay, they write off £1 of arrears. Ask your water company about debt matching schemes.

    Reducing your water bill

    Get a water meter

If your household has **fewer people than bedrooms**, a meter often reduces your bill. You can request a free meter installation and switch back within 2 years if it costs more.

    Check for leaks

A dripping tap wastes **5,500 litres per year**. Most water companies offer **free leak checks**.

    WaterSave devices

Many companies provide free water-saving devices (shower timers, tap aerators, cistern bags).

    If you're in water debt

    1. Contact your water company

They have dedicated hardship teams. Most will:

  • Set up an affordable payment plan
  • Apply any discounts you're eligible for
  • Refer you to their social tariff

  • 2. Apply for the social tariff

Even if you're behind on payments, you can usually still apply.

    3. Get help from a debt advisor

Water debt is a priority debt. Free advice from:

  • **StepChange**: 0800 138 1111

  • 4. Check your home
