Energy bills remain a significant pressure for millions of UK households. Here is every form of support currently available.

Government schemes

Warm Home Discount (£150)

A one-off £150 discount on your electricity bill. You may qualify automatically if you receive Pension Credit, or you may need to apply through your energy supplier.

Winter Fuel Payment (£100–£300)

An annual tax-free payment to help with heating costs. You're eligible if you were born before a qualifying date (currently linked to Pension Credit qualification).

Cold Weather Payments (£25 per week)

If you receive certain benefits and the temperature drops below zero for 7 consecutive days, you get £25 automatically. No application needed.

Energy supplier support

Hardship funds

Most major energy suppliers have their own hardship funds that provide **one-off grants** to clear energy debt:

  • British Gas Energy Trust
  • EDF Energy Customer Support Fund
  • E.ON Next Energy Fund
  • Scottish Power Hardship Fund
  • OVO Energy Fund

  • Each has different criteria, but they typically require you to be in energy debt and on a low income.

    Payment plans

All energy suppliers are required to offer payment plans if you're in debt. Contact them to arrange affordable instalments.

    Priority Services Register

If you're elderly, disabled, chronically ill, or have young children, register for extra support. This includes advance notice of any supply interruptions and access to additional help.

    Council support

    Local Welfare Assistance

Your local council may offer emergency energy vouchers or grants. Contact them directly or check their website.

    Household Support Fund

Many councils distribute government funding to help with energy bills. Rules vary by area.

    Reducing your bills

  • **Switch tariff** — even if you're in debt (up to £500), you can usually switch to a cheaper tariff
  • **Get a smart meter** — helps you monitor usage in real time
  • **Check your insulation** — grants may be available through the ECO scheme
  • **Use your heating efficiently** — heating the rooms you use rather than the whole house can save significantly

  • If you're struggling, don't wait. Contact your energy supplier's hardship team today. They are required to help.
